Soooo, this episode.
“Balance of Terror” spoiled me; I was expecting something not that bad, and I got something… I got something.
Biggest sticking point: If Chapel’s all in love with Spock or whatever (“The Naked Time”, which was made and aired before this one) why the hell wouldn’t she mention her fiancĂ©? Even in a throwaway line like “I can’t help it, blah blah, fiancĂ©”? Wait, sorry, I forgot, continuity doesn’t work in space.
At least they gave her a backstory of intelligence; too bad they never really made much of it.
And what the hell was that with Kirk and Andrea? That was pretty rapey. Seriously—Andrea says “No. Not programmed for you,” so Kirk gets his smug I’m-so-awesome face on and says “What’s the matter, Andrea? Confused?” I don’t even get/probably missed what the point of that whole scene was supposed to be because HEEBIE JEEBIES, YOU GUYS.
There were some good things, though, like the above scene (apx. 34:50; his expression when he sizes it up and then goes to seize it and pull on it until it gives—oh lol I can’t finish) and Spock being generally over-emotive, by his standards, when it comes to Kirk. It’s no use trying to hide the love, bb.
So, yeah. Next week is gonna be “Dagger of the Mind” and I don’t even know what that one’s about, so no expectations there. (Other than: there better be gay subtext.)
